How Did You Do That: Landlord and Property Developer Breakfast

On October 2, 2002, the Los Angeles County AB 2034 Program and the Homeless and Housing Division jointly hosted a Landlord and Property Developer Breakfast at the California Science Center at Exposition Park. With its theme of “Building Partnerships”, the event provided a forum to disseminate information regarding the services available to tenants with a psychiatric disability and to encourage landlords and developers to expand housing resources for this population.Resources/services to support successful independent community living for mentally ill tenants include AB 2034 housing funds, Homeless Section 8 Certificates and 24/7 crisis response by mental health providers.

Fifty-five landlords and/or property developers and thirty mental health professionals participated in this event, as well as representatives from the Housing Authorities of Los Angeles City and County, Los Angeles City Housing Department, and the Corporation for Supportive Housing. Participants discussed subsidized housing assistance, the Section 8 inspection process, low interest loans to purchase or rehabilitate housing units, and other financial incentives to provide housing for homeless mentally ill people.

Landlords and property developers were encouraged to enter into collaboration with mental health providers to make existing housing units available and to develop new housing stock for this population. An important aspect of the meeting was the networking that took place following the presentations. Feedback from participants indicated that they enjoyed learning innovative approaches to increasing housing stock for the homeless mentally ill, and that they were eager to develop new partnerships.
