Recognizing and Countering Implicit Bias by Changing Practices in Telehealth

Please join us for the webinar: Recognizing and Countering Implicit Bias by Changing Practices in Telehealth. This is the eleventh webinar in the 12-webinar series, Minimizing Disruptions in Care Through the Use of Behavioral Telehealth (Video and Phone). The goal of this webinar is to improve whole health outcomes enhancing awareness of implicit bias and offering strategies to counter bias in order to increase individual empathy and organizational responsiveness to clients’ needs.

Learning Objectives include:

  1. Participants will be able to describe at least two strategies for enhancing clinician self-awareness of implicit bias to increase responsiveness to clients’ needs in the treatment setting.
  2. Participants will be able to discuss at least two strategies for countering clinician implicit bias to increase empathy toward clients’ needs in the treatment setting.
  3. Participants will be able to identify at least one organizational practice for reducing health disparities in the health care setting.

This webinar series is intended to not only build skills in telehealth, but also to highlight some of the learning from the field in offering behavioral telehealth services. We want to hear from you, so please bring your innovations, success stories and learning from your own transition to telehealth resulting from COVID-19.

Presenters

Adèle James is the founder and CEO of Adèle James Consulting Inc. (www.adelejamesconsulting.com). She brings more than 20-years experience in public, non-profit and philanthropic sectors, including 11 years in foundation grant making with three California based foundations. Over the past 20 years, she has managed multi-subject grant portfolios throughout California. She brings a comprehensive expertise as a funder, organizational development consultant, university faculty member, and executive coach. Her services include program planning and design, participatory action research, meeting facilitation, training, executive coaching, assessment and implementation of organizational equity and inclusion practices. As part of the Mental Health Services Act’s Statewide Prevention & Early Intervention Initiatives’ $140 million disbursement, Adèle co-facilitated the proposal review process, developed recommendations for grantee capacity building, as well as designed, facilitated a two-day orientation for awardees. Her portfolio also includes working with a collaborative of 9 family resource centers to design and implement a Cultural Responsiveness Action Plan based on the National Cultural & Linguistically Appropriate Service (CLAS) Standards, and development of an accompanying Cultural Responsiveness Toolkit.

A native of Trinidad, West Indies, Adèle is passionate about improving programs and systems to serve increasingly diverse communities. Adèle loves the adventure of international travel and is working on a forthcoming book of stories and photography of the work of artists and artisans in Trinidad & Tobago (www.middlepassagearts.com). Adèle holds a BA from Barnard College, Columbia University, and an MA from Stanford University in International Development Education.     

Elizabeth Morrison is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, with a Masters in Addiction Counseling. She is a practicing clinician, providing services to MediCal and uninsured patients in a primary care clinic.  Elizabeth has been providing services via telephone, video, and text since the Shelter in Place order began. She has over 15 years of experience in developing effective and sustainable Integrated Behavioral Health (IBH) services in primary care organizations. She wrote the first widely distributed ‘how to’ manual on IBH.  A thought leader in the field, Elizabeth has also served on integrated care advisory boards for the California Primary Care Association and the UCSF School of Medicine. She is an expert Motivational Interviewing (MI) Trainer and has been providing research-based training and Train the Trainer courses in MI and other empathy-based communications for healthcare professionals for over 20 years.
