The Infant, Preschool, Family, Mental Health Initiative (IPFMHI)

CIBHS is pleased to provide this set of documents produced through the Infant, Preschool, Family, Mental Health Initiative (IPFMHI). These products, a joint effort of First 5 California, the California Department of Mental Health, and the California Institute of Mental Health, are designed to support First 5 Special Needs Demonstrations Sites, First 5 School Readiness Sites, and other early mental health program efforts across the state.

These three guides offer information and outline structures that can support the development of programs that identify social-emotional developmental delays and disorders, and promote access to prevention, early intervention, and treatment services for children birth to 5 years old.

The first guide, Mental Health Screening and Referral Capacity for Children 0-5, describes the screening process, highlighting program design, and staffing considerations. The second, Strategies for Financing Mental Health Screening, Assessment, and Services, is a primer reviewing the various strategies and resources for funding these services in California. Lastly, the Compendium of Screening Tools for Early Childhood Social-Emotional Development reviews the characteristics that will determine selection of screening instruments and introduces a series of tools for consideration when establishing a screening process.

Please contact First 5 California, the California Department of Mental Health, or the California Institute for Behavioral Health Solutions if you would like more information about early childhood mental health services.
